Social networking has never been more popular in our society. Following modern trends even in educational settings is a potential recipe for success. Cost, Registration Issues –
Twitter is an entirely free open source program. Now, although twitter is free to the general public you must have Internet access to use twitter. This isn’t a big deal with most students and their Internet access at home but it is in schools. Some schools have banned twitter from being accessed in schools. It can also being a limiting issue when it comes to utilizing the full power of twitter in remote locations because not all students have the ability to update their accounts from their cell phones or laptops. Registration for twitter is very simple but clearly that isn’t the primary issue with twitter usage.
Useful in what content and value to classroom –
Using twitter in the classroom could make any teacher become one of the coolest teachers. Student’s now days are incredibly interested in social networking, for better or for worse. As mentioned before using twitter could be an incredible resource for any content area. The value could be priceless in-regards to student’s interest and involvement. There are still negatives aspects to the program that have been widely broadcasted across all mediums. These are issues that are accepted when using a social networking site.
Meta-cognition and Twitter –
Of the other programs that have been presented I believe twitter is the least supporting of meta-cognition. I say this because I don’t believe twitter actually allows individuals to learn or benefit from its usage. When someone learned they could communicate with others via methods aside from word of mouth and written messages this idea evolved. I don’t feel as if this is a learning experience that can impact how individuals make future decisions.
